May 30, 2012 | Posted in News

On Thursday, May 24, Chairman Billy Lewis, opened the North East Community Foundation’s 20th Annual Meeting by citing many of the milestones that have marked the evolution of the Foundation. Twenty years ago, a group of North East residents had a vision for the vacant St. Mary’s Seminary – a college campus. This group launched a successful community-wide effort to raise $500,000 to help purchase the St. Mary’s property and develop what is known today as the Mercyhurst North East campus. This effort also served as the beginnings of the North East Community Foundation.

Nancy Anderson, NECF Trustee and Grant Making Committee Chairperson, recognized the 2011 recipients of the grants, scholarships, and designated fund disbursements that were disbursed locally to 34 programs and 4 scholarship winners, totaling $93,647.

The 2012 Lake & Smith Award for Excellence in Community Service, named in honor of Emeritus Directors Ernest Lake and Geraldine Smith, was awarded to Mercyhurst University - The North East Campus. When Chris Miller, NECF Trustee, presented the award to Dr. Gary Brown, Executive Vice President & CFO of Mercyhurst University, he noted the significant economic development role that the university plays in our community, as well as the quality educational services delivered to its students.

During the meeting, an inspirational video was premiered to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Foundation. Produced by North East residents Rich and Lisa Gensheimer of Main Street Media, Inc., the video celebrates the highlights of the Foundation’s 20-year history. Interviews with key figures were interspersed with vignettes about programs and activities funded by the Foundation over the years.

In 2011, 22 individuals and organizations donated more than $171,000 to the funds that make up the portfolio of the North East Community Foundation, bringing the total value of those funds to more than $3,254,000. During its first 20 years, the Foundation has granted more than $1 million to 75 organizations.
