2012 Grantees

On Tuesday, February 7, The North East Community Foundation awarded eight grants during halftime of the North East-Iroquois boys basketball game. These initial grants for 2012 totaled $17,600, including: $4,800 to the North East Arts Council - $3,000 for Picnic in the Park and $1,800 for the Missoula Children’s Theatre; $4,000 to the NE Rec Commission; $2,500 to 4 NINE Place for the Grapevine TimeXchange program; $1,800 to the Girl Scouts of Western PA, NE Unit 3603; $1,800 to Boy Scout Troop #82; $1,500 to Boy Scout Troup #57; and $1,200 to Cub Scout Pack #57.

Additional grant requests will be reviewed by the Community Foundation’s Board throughout the year, and will be announced and presented as they are approved. Last year the Foundation awarded over $88,000 in grants to a wide variety of projects and programs that all have at least one objective in common: Improving the quality of life for the greater North East community.

2012 marks the 20th anniversary of the North East Community Foundation, which was initially formed to encourage and support the creation of Mercyhurst’s branch campus in North East. From those rather humble beginnings, the Foundation is now the steward of a portfolio of funds that have been donated or bequeathed to the NECF over the years, valued at the end of 2011 at more than $3.1 million. Income from these managed investments is distributed annually by the Board in response to requests for assistance received throughout the year from local non-profit organizations also striving to make things better in North East.
